Causally intense planning w/ @countercurrent_art + @theplasticpick_up on our upcoming collab. We’ll be having a ball with golf balls🏌️♀️ Click the @countercurrent_art bio link to support their GoFundMe project and to learn the incredible backstory of the golf balls. Stay tuned for details on what Ventana is creating for this epic collaboration.
@countercurrent_art’s newest public art project, “Fore the Waves,” is a 26ft x 8ft x 8ft interactive/portable wave sculpture made from over 20,000 golf balls collected from the seafloor off Pebble Beach, CA by @theplasticpick_up.
Then-high school student @alex___weber led the collection effort and published a scientific study with researchers from @hopkinsmarinestation@stanford demonstrating that they break up in the surf zone, releasing their microplastic cores that can contain seriously toxic additives such as zinc acrylate.
As a result of this teen-led cleanup effort, @noaasanctuaries and Pebble Beach Golf Course have designed a formal protocol involving over 200 underwater cleanups for the next 5 years to continue to collect the 2-5 million more balls that are thought to be offshore of the Pebble Beach coastline. The goal of this mobile art installation is to expand the adoption of the cleanup protocol to coastal golf courses globally, while highlighting the power of individuals (young and old) to make a positive impact on their local ecosystem.
The sculpture will be built on a 26ft flatbed trailer so @countercurrent_art will be able to activate it at different events around the country including their first stop at @theohanafest in September! We’re looking forward to sharing this positive story far and wide!
Of course #plasticpollution is bigger than golf balls, but we’re excited that this project will lead to conversations that inspire people to think about the unintended impacts our actions have on the ocean.

———————————————————————- Karriem Riggins is best known as a jazz drummer and hip-hop producer for artists like Common, Slum Village, Talib Kweli and The Roots, but he doesn’t categorize himself as anything but an artist. He advises younger musicians to do the same. “You don’t have to put yourself in a box…there’s so many different ways to go,” Riggins says. A student of late jazz bassist Ray Brown, he tours with another Brown protégé, Grammy Award winner Diana Krall. In 2011, he collaborated with former Beatle Paul McCartney in concert and on Kisses on the Bottom, McCartney’s first studio release in five years. Names of some of the jazz artists he’s backed reads like the genre’s hall of fame – Hank Jones, Oscar Peterson, Milt Jackson, Donald Byrd and Ron Carter.
Riggins is positioned right at the intersection of hip-hop and jazz. Alone Together is that intersection; it’s the jazz music he’s played professionally since the age of 19, crafting beats like “Africa” on an MPC5000 while touring throughout Eastern Europe and Russia. •

Darren, learning the game of golf. He has never played on the course. Took 3 lessons last year and came back to finish what he started. Really happy with his progress. His quote was “Now I know what a good golf shot feels like!”
Årets första runda och jag går på mitt HCP, bra start på säsongen🏌🏼♀️

My favorite hole at Streamsong. Pictured here is the 7th Hole on the Blue course designed by Tom Doak. If you look closely enough, you can see an alligator too. What’s your favorite hole at Streamsong?
