Built from local red sandstone that, on the day of my visit, rises stark against a soupy Scottish sky, Arbroath Abbey offers much for lovers of Scottish history and Gothic tombstone settings. Founded in 1178 by King William the Lion for monks of the Tironensian order, Arbroath Abbey was the richest in Scotland, being built over sixty years. It fell into ruin after the Reformation. From 1590 onward, its stones were raided for buildings in the town of Arbroath, which continued until 1815. It is famous for its association with the 1320 Declaration of Arbroath (in which Scotland’s nobles swore their independence from England), believed to have been drafted by Abbot Bernard, who was the Chancellor of Scotland under King Robert I. It makes sense, therefore, that it was here that the Stone of Destiny — stolen from Westminster Abbey on Christmas Day, 1950 — was found lying on the site of the Abbey's altar, 11 April 1951. #arbroathabbey#arbroath#abbey#ruinedabbey#scottishabbeys#ruin#scottishruins#sandstone#redsandstone#instascotland#gothic#visitscotland#churchruins#monument#tombstone#scotland#britain

It’s been about a week since the #Monument10k. I usually run but this year decided to skip the race in favor of running the 1 mile Kid’s race with Charlie and be a spectator for the 10k for the first time ever. The 10k is literally one of the most Richmond events that exists. People run for time, some run for fun, some walk, some wear costumes and some people just drink and play lawn games in the median. There are live bands about each .1 mile along the race route. It’s pretty much always a good time.
I told Charlie we were going to practice running slowly so that we could try to run the whole thing. She walked twice but was able to pick it back up and turn on her “vampire speed” all the way through the finish line. She ran the mile in about 11 minutes which is not bad for her short little legs. I’m just so happy that we got to share my passion for running and fitness. Especially because Charlie tends to lean toward Brandon’s interests more than mine which hasn’t always been easy. I sometimes struggle to relate to her. Especially when she complains about being dirty and wants to stay inside and build things or play video games. I’m like “let’s go hiking and play in the river” and I get 😒
I’ve been working on disconnecting myself from needing Charlie to have the same life experiences I did. She doesn’t need to play the same sports, go to the same kind of school or have the same interests as me. Whatever she’s interested in, I hope to be able to help facilitate and encourage her to work on things that she enjoys because honestly, she’s going to be most motivated to be successful at something if she loves it.
