It appears as though Thursday evening/Friday morning, will be when all the Met. action should occur! 🌧 ❄️ 💨 💨
Currently, a strong cold front is moving north east, through the Bight (@ 30 knots). This is essentially the leading edge of a colder mass of air, moving rapidly towards NSW and Victoria.
This mass, is a ‘polar blast’, comprising very cold and dense air.
The synoptic chart for late Thursday evening, shows a lot of interesting stuff happening! 🤗
The low pressure system, just south of Victoria (Bass Straight) - is forecast to be around 984hPa - which is quite a low reading. The atmosphere in this region, is very unstable.
The isobars, extending from the Bight, across NSW and Victoria, are very close together.
This will almost certainly cause squally, blizzard conditions in the snowy alpine areas.
Elsewhere, it will be very windy 🌬...particularly through Victoria and southern NSW.
This polar air mass, appears to be relatively ‘dry’. So, don’t expect massive down-pours of rain 😥...probably no more than 10-20mm 🌧
There doesn’t exist any trough systems, feeding tropical moisture in from the north.
Expect snow to fall at much lower heights than usual. Possibly below 800m? 🤔 ⛄️ Which is exciting news for the lower land areas, which surround the snowy alpine mountains 🏔
The amount of snow that falls, is again, dependent upon how much moisture is contained in this cold polar air mass.
Winds on Thursday evening, will be mostly from the west, south west and north west, at around ground level (winds are variable, at higher altitudes). So, that’s it! 👌
The BoM are typically slow to issue any serious warnings ⚠️ ....but I think they are now, slowing appearing.
It will take local media outlets, the usual ‘after the event’ situation, before they issue any warnings 🙄
Can't get enough of this awe inspiring landscape! I feel so small but so honoured to be able to witness this beauty in the quiet winter months, enjoy the slow pace of life and simply be. #nsw#talbingo#mountains#bushwalks#awefilling

"I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived."

Located in the Geehi River Flats area, Dr Forbes hut is the one stone hut on the north side of the Thredbo to Khancoban road.
Accessible from a short 4WD track just before (east side) of the Geehi River bridge, plus a "jump" across the creek.
It is one of five river stone huts located within the Geehi area along the Swampy Plains River. The local environment heavily influenced the materials fron which a hut was built, and river stone is in plentiful supply.
It was built by Ned Nicholson and Dr John Forbes and used by a wide group of friends. Up until 1956 access to the hut was by pack horse only and all the corrugated iron used in the hut was in short lengths so it could be carried in on the side of a horse.
This hut is built of river stones on a concrete floor, with a stone and concrete chimney. It includes a sleepout and verandah, covered by an iron roof. There was an external toilet, but it is yet to be rebuilt.
The structure including stone walls was badly damaged in the 2003 fires, and has been rebuilt by NPWS and KHA volunteers. It is now in excellent condition, and a tribute to the workers.
