I started 2019 with a challenge to myself. 6 weeks, no beer. I don’t drink in excess anymore, just a few craft brews on the weekend when I’m relaxing. I’m always looking to reassess my relationships with things in my life. Interestingly, my 6 week challenge has led me into the middle of a very important month for me. It was 10 years ago that I put down the drugs and began the long, arduous path out of chaos and addiction. I went searching through some old photos and decided to put together a transformation post.
Pic 1: I’m about 22 years old here, 170, and about 6 months into complete sobriety. I was learning to live life again. Getting away from the drugs and alcohol was terrifying and exhilarating. I had rediscovered a love of fitness, I was running about 20-30km a week, doing bodyweight workouts and meditating for a couple hours a day.
Pic 2: 26 years old. I had started lifted weights 5 times a week. I’m about 210 here, putting on 40lbs within a few months. I was always underweight my whole life. It felt great to be filling out my frame now. I was sober for just under 5 years now, and it was in the next few months that I began to drink beer in moderation again.
Pic 3: 29 years old. After starting a job that led me to work 65+ hours a week, my fitness really all but stopped for 2 years. I dropped back down to 185, wasn’t eating as well and had started smoking cigarettes on and off. This picture was taken about a year after I cut all that out. I was going to the gym 3 days a week, and doing karate 2 days a week for about a year. My weight was back up to 212, but I felt bloated and didn’t have great cardio. But I was getting myself back on track and that’s what mattered.
Pic 4: Today. 30 years old. Fresh off my challenge. Holding steady at 200/205. Current routine is kickboxing and karate 4 days a week, weightlifting 2 days a week and yoga 2 days a week. I feel amazing, I’m in the best shape of my life.
Dig deep and never give up. The future is what you make of it.
